Humpback whales are one of the main reasons people visit Puerto Lopez, which is why we are here. The whales make their yearly stop along the coast of Ecuador between June and September to mate, give birth, and entertain humans fascinated by their everyday behavior. They surface to take a deep breath, blow water into the air, and every now and then decide to shoot out into the sky. I saw one whale breaching but wasn't fast enough with my camera so will have to keep that as a vivid memory until the next time.

The malecón is now being fixed up with new brick and cobblestone and plants along the edges. Maybe we will go back next August or September to see the whales and enjoy the now finished malecón along the beach.
