The Benton MacKaye Trail (BMT), a footpath of 288 miles through the Appalachian mountains of the southeastern United States, about 80 milesof which are in Georgia. It is designed for foot travel in the tradition of the Appalachian Trail (AT). Running from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Big Creek Campground on the northern edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (the Smokies), the BMT passes through some of the most remote backcountry in Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina, including eight federally designated Wilderness and Wilderness Study Areas.

There are 10 sections of the trail in Georgia.  We had hoped to hike all 10 of them but so far have only done the first 6 sections and only a portion of Section 2 as that is quite long.  Section 7 is 8.4 miles; section 8 is 12.8 miles; section 9 is 4.5 miles and section 10 is 8.5 miles.  We could do section 9 in one day going in and back but the other sections would require our going in half way and then out and then another hike from the other end, going in half way then back out.  I don't know if we are up to hiking almost 13 miles so I don't know that we will be able to attempt section 8; but who knows.

I hope you enjoy our hikes as much as we did.
