Star Base is our celestial calendar, marking the movement of the sun through the seasons of the year. Star Base was designed by John Burgess of Fernbank Science Center at the request of our architect, Garland Reynolds.
The large "V" shaped rock with the hole in the center marks the fall & spring equinox, the time when the sun crosses the equator, making night and day of equal length in all parts of the earth. On these two days (March and September 21st), as the sun rises above the horizon, it projects the shadow of the "V" rock into the back of the cave. It also shines through the hole in the "V" and Into the center of the cave.
The large rocks around the "V" also have significance. The one directly In front of the "V" points east. Other rocks mark north, northeast, south and southeast. The northeastern rock marks the summer solstice, June 21st , which is the longest day of the year. This rock points to the position on the horizon where the sun will rise on that day. The winter solstice, December 21st, the shortest day on the year, is marked by the southeastern rock which points to the sunrise on that day.

Mike setting the table. As volunteers, our duties were to set the tables before breakfast and dinner and then to clear them. We served the meals, washed dishes and did anything we could to help. We had free time from after breakfast dishes were clearred and washed until it was time to set the tables for dinner.
This shows the dinning room. With your room, rustic but comfortable, consists of bunk beds. There is a communal bath and shower. You are served breakfast and dinner and the meals are FANTASTIC!!

This group of women are "The Happy Hoofers" and were there for the weekend. Every year they go different places to hike.
