4/14/11 - Brasstown Bald
Brasstown Bald is the highest natural point in the state of Georgia, with a summit elevation of 4,784 feet above sea level. It is the highest in a spine of mountains collectively known as Wolfpen Ridge. Although Brasstown Bald looms taller over the Southern Appalachians it is less popular than its' better known brothers, Blood and Trey Mountains. Brasstown Bald is easily recognized by the tower atop the peak. On clear days, the spectacular 360-degree view from atop the mountain allows you to see four states, including Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina.
Brasstown Bald is partly in Towns and partly in Union counties, the peak being divided by the county line. The mountain is part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, (part of the Appalachian Mountains), and within the borders of the Blue Ridge Ranger District of the Chattahoochee National Forest. The mountain is mostly made up of soapstone and dunite.
