Situated about 8 miles from Smith Center is the cabin where Dr. Brewster M. Higley lived when he wrote “Home on the Range” in 1872. Dr. Higley was a homesteading doctor from Ohio. “Home on the Range” was adopted as the state song of Kansas in 1947 and set to music by Dan Kelley of Gaylord, KS.

Inside the cabin. There is no insulation. The walls were covered with what looked like clay, giving the them a smoother, lighter finish than simple rough wood would give.
