Situated about 8 miles from Smith Center is the cabin where Dr. Brewster M. Higley lived when he wrote “Home on the Range” in 1872. Dr. Higley was a homesteading doctor from Ohio. “Home on the Range” was adopted as the state song of Kansas in 1947 and set to music by Dan Kelley of Gaylord, KS.
